Synergizing the old and the new- Dr Chinmay Mehta

Creativity connects the traditional and the contemporary, interfacing between various cultural industries. In Dr Chinmay Mehta’s works, each resonates with the other creating a different form of expression in art, architecture and culture. Dr Chinmay Mehta combines in himself the similar, yet vast fields of painting, fine arts, design, architecture and academics, each merging seamlessly into one another.

He is worthy of prolonged and intensive notice as among the few artists in Rajasthan and India who have explored the possibilities of modern art from a different perspective, giving new dimensions to the entire context of Indian identity, relationships and culture.

His journey has been an overwhelming one. His paintings and murals depict a certain resonance that regains from modern arts, while borrowing from Indian culture and language, experience and iconography. One sees an exciting blend of two approaches in his work: an internationalist modernism and a search for a cultural sensitivity in art practice. Through involvement in visual arts, writing, academics, creating murals integrated with architecture, he has broken out of the narrow limits of high art and is very successful in creating varied modes of cultural production.

This is the part of a case study submitted by an architectural student by Gurmeet singh,

Creativity sees no age, language or profession and that is how Professor Chinmay Mehta is different. Being an artist and a visual arts professor by status, he has marked his place in the field of architecture as well and it is true to say that he is no less than any other architect that follows the ethnic architecture of Rajasthan. Working at the interface of architecture and art, Professor Chinmay Mehta keeps crossing the boundaries between both disciplines day in, day out. His iconic vision of recreating the culture of Rajasthan based on his belief of making it big, a grass-root concept from his own roots. Shaping the vision, and encapsulating with the rural and rustic resources, he has been the main instrument behind giving this resort concept a tangible entity.

His approach towards rich heritage conservation design aims to preserve the salient characteristics of sectional interest and episodic spaces while transforming- with the introduction of a rich tradition and culture of the state of Rajasthan- its identity into a dignified architectural statement of contemporary urban habitation responding to the insular form of the small mud huts. These designs strive for tranquility and calmness amidst the chaos of the city. Aesthetically distilled, his works are also motivated by the cultural and climatic context, integrating the landscape features, baoli-wells, water features and village elements. An important idea is that of ‘procession’ juxtaposed over the sequence of spaces both in plan and section – movements are choreographed to amplify the rhythm and spaces of the architecture. Chokhi Dhani is a concept to join the Rajasthani tribs from the world and to give an exposure to all about the village life in Rajasthan. It was to make the resort units look traditional with Rajasthani Architecture outside and at the same time to provide most modern facilities inside. Warm hospitality in line with the Rajasthani tradition of “Padharo Mahare Desh” transports you to the era of Thakurs, the village lords.

Professor Chinmay Mehta is a painter, Architectural designer & cultural activist. He was a former dean & professor of fine arts college in University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. He is a man with creative vision & artistic mind.

I am a final year architecture student so, it is always fascinating to meet people from creative backgrounds & take guidance from them for any topic or project,it widens the vision of any architectural student who meet the person with number of creative ideas & Prof. Mehta is one of them.

Prof. Mehta is very humble person & one with kind heart. I very much enjoyed my dialogue with this intelligent & courteous gentleman. While discussion he suggested number of projects for my reference as well as guided me regarding my designing strategies.

He is a national academy award winner Painter- Muralist. Our conversation followed by discussion of his works, recent paintings &murals; it was astonishing! He has a versatile personality with extensive vision which is very inspiring for any student from arts & crafts background.

There is a list of achievements of Prof. Mehta still he is arranging workshops, exhibitions of his work &enthusiastic about his future projects& works. He is designer of series of ethnic resorts like Chokhi Dhani, Pride amber villas-Jaipur, Dhola-ri-Dhani -Hyderabad, Nirali Dhani- Jodhpur, Shilpagram- Udaipur, etc. He makes visualization or 3-D sketches of his concepts & designs then they are converted to the measure drawings which is important for any such projects. While guiding me for my topic he suggested same procedure to follow & I personally found it very fascinating.  I found Mehta sir’s work quite interesting & inspiring. His work directly addresses the traditional architectural style with contemporary touch.  His creativity connects the traditional lifestyle & contemporary.
